The Eye Trailer

As part of my study i watched this thriller so that i could get a better understanding of the thriller genre. Sadly i could not find the specific sequence, only the trailer. The sequence i wanted to show is where the protagonist (the woman) first sees a little girl that nobody else can see through her eyes. I thought that that sequence went well with my study because it was set in a hospital and i want to achieve that look for my setting. The trailer itself shows hopw the conventions and codes have been used to set the horror genre, the clip has helped me think of more ideas to add to my story board, i like the ways the flashes are used when she looks through her eyes (p.o.v shot), the editing fits with the sequence really well they act as flashbacks which in a way they are, i really want to experiment with a technique like this in my film sequence.

Editing was a focus point when looking at this trailer. I had atched the movie to expand my knoowledge on thriller movies and this movie stuck out because of it's editing techniques. The editing is very vibrant ans strong an i hadn't seen this before in any thriller movie so i needed to help with my understanding of editing. The impact of the hevay and vibrant editing works well alongside the thriller genre and leaves the audience with a shocking response. They are shocked by the flickering of lights and flashbacks into the past th flicker of light turns into a motif in this film because the flicker is shown before thrill and horror of the charcter behind the light. Some of the shots have been blurred on taken out of focus this is partly due to the cinematography however it works well it disguises the horror so that the audience cannot figure out who it is which leaves an emotional and thrilling experience on the audience. This is important as that is what the audience have come to see, they expect to be excited and scared at the same time. The blurring connotes the fact that the girl cannot see properly if shows us her point of viw shot again refering to cinematography, showing it through her eyes makes us feel more emotionally involved with the protagonist and it helps the audience feel the fright of her experience. It puts them into her body so that they get the real thrill sensation.

Another important factor i picked out with this clip is representation. Representation is an important part of directing and creating your own film. It is important that the protagonist is represented in the correct way so that the audience can follow the sterotype and understand the codes and conventions to help them read the media context. The sterotype is heavily expressed in this clip. To start off the protagonist is a female; which is most thriller/horror genres they are the most common victim because they are seen as weaker and vunerable they are easier to target then 'big strong men' for example. We firstly see the doctor from the protagonists point of view which imediatley shows her being looked after by a male; it expresses this idea that she needs looking after and she shouldn't be alone. We then see her surrounded by her family, we relate with her through close ups and point of view shots, the close ups reflect on her point of view. Everybody is crowded around her to greet her back from the hosiptal and she immediatley is centre framed from a slight high angle. The audience see from herexpression that she is afraid and hiding behind her fear of people. She is then framed alone from a long sht which shows the audience that she is alone she is also very pale and her eyes are blurred from her operation she doesn't look herself and again she is beinf represented as vunerable and the audience can she that she is afraid. The dark lighting surrounds her in many shots showing that the 'new life' she has been given has not given her the chance she needed it has opened up[ the doors to darkness and the fear of the unknown awaits. Studying this film has really helped me in terms of representation it has given me strong ideas on how to represent my charcter.
